Teatro Pereyra Ibiza is set to host film screenings once more after a 40-year gap in partnership with Club Náutico de Ibiza (CNE), which celebrates its centenary this year. This exciting revival signals the start of a series of commemorative events for this milestone anniversary.
The history of cinema in Ibiza dates back to 1904, when the first (and much awaited) film projector arrived on the island, enabling the island's inhabitants to experience the silver screen for the very first time. Teatro Pereyra was privileged to premiere this format, screening silent films and quickly establishing itself as THE meeting place for curious spectators and early cinephiles alike.
In 1987, after more than 70 uninterrupted years of screenings, the venue was forced to close its doors to cinema. Now, at a time when traditional cinemas are fast disappearing, Teatro Pereyra is about to revive cinema screenings, bolstering its role as Ibiza's foremost cultural venue over the winter with a diverse programme suitable for all audiences.
The first film to be screened will be Captains Courageous (1937), a classic directed by Victor Fleming (who went on to make Gone with the Wind & The Wizard of Oz). This special showing will take place on Tuesday, 4 February. It aims to bring together members and supporters of Ibiza Yacht Club, along with movie lovers from across the island.
Best of all, this is just the beginning: from now on, the legendary venue will show a new film every Tuesday, reclaiming its spot as Ibiza's most popular rendezvous point for film lovers.
Teatro Pereyra and Club Náutico de Ibiza invite CNE members, supporters, and the general public to attend this inaugural screening and share in the joy of cinema in a truly unique setting.
