Twitchers' Paradise: Birdwatching in Ibiza and Formentera

This autumn, Ibiza and Formentera are showcasing their vibrant biodiversity and the protection of migratory birds in honour of World Migratory Bird Day on 12 October.

Known for their pristine landscapes, the two Pitiusas Islands serve as vital stopovers for thousands of birds during their annual migrations. Ibiza and Formentera offer bird-watching enthusiasts a golden opportunity to observe a diverse range of species in their natural habitat.

Ses Salines Natural Park, which covers nearly 2,000 hectares between both islands, is one of the foremost bird sanctuaries in the region. It is home to a variety of landscapes, including wetlands, salt flats, dunes and forests, making it an ideal haven for over 210 species of birds.

Avid amateur ornithologists can see iconic species such as flamingos and many other migratory and native birds from the marine bird's observatory (Google map ) on the edge of the park.

Among the species that can be spotted are the Balearic warbler, black-necked storks, and the endangered Audouin's gull.

Formentera is also a superb spot for birdwatching.

The island's rugged La Mola region is a designated Special Protection Area, while its network of scenic green routes for hikes and bike rides provides plenty of chances to observe our feathered friends, including the Balearic spotted flycatcher.

Thanks to a network of observatories across Ibiza and Formentera, both islands have become leading destinations for birdwatching. Whether observing birds from the wetlands of Las Salinas or enjoying the quiet beauty of Formentera's nature trails, they offer a unique connection to the natural world.

Check out the amazing birdwatching opportunities and put a feather in your cap when you return home!
