Es Vedrà: why go, the myths and where to see it

One of the island's most dramatic sights, this towering rock is the jewel in Ibiza's crown.

Standing at almost 400 metres high, just off the south-west coast of Ibiza, is the magical and legendary rock of Es Vedrà. Many visitors go to marvel at this beguiling landmark when they come here. It's not difficult to see why.

When you get your first proper glimpse of this big, imposing rock, you will feel awe and wonder as well as the magical feeling of your heart being set alight with joy. It truly lifts your spirits.

It has definitely become one of the must-see sights when coming to Ibiza and it really does take your breath away. You'll notice how it rises majestically from the sea, almost transmitting a feeling of peace and, dare we say, serenity. It's no surprise that people go there to practise meditation.

Cala d'Hort beach is a terrific place to go and see it. There are restaurants on the beach, on the cliff above it and along the coast nearby, where you can enjoy the views with a drink and some excellent food - reservations are recommended!

From several points along the coast you have a nice view of Es Vedrà. But please be careful not to trespass on private property, and don't step too near to the cliffs, especially when taking photos.

Many other ways of seeing this rock are available to the visitor. A splendid way of seeing it is from the sea on one of the many boat trips that pass or go up close to it - Capitan Nemo and Excursiones Ibiza both run fun trips to the island. Another way is to charter a boat for the day.

Those who want to really get near to it can go over by SUP. Take a boat from Cala Vadella with these trained SUP instructors who will take care of you and make sure you have an unforgettable experience.

A great, no-strain alternative is to go on one of these four-to five-hour Jeep Tours, either in a shared or private tour, which will ensure you get there just in time for the sunset.

Another place to gaze at its splendour is from Hotel 7Pines Resort near Cala Conta or the roof terrace of the Petunia Ibiza, a Beaumier Hotel in Cala Carbó - with a cocktail of course. If driving, the approach to Cala Carbó beach offers one of the most dramatic of views, with the rock looming large before you like a mysterious miracle of nature.

Keeping Es Vedrà safe for everyone

  • The area is popular in summer with many cars lining the approach to Cala d'Hort, so be very careful walking along the road.
  • Be very careful when approaching the cliff edge and do not go too close. There is a sheer drop and people can easily fall. We recommend to watch the sunset from the beach.
  • Do not trespass on private property, be responsible and considerate of the people who live here.
  • Avoid smoking and, if you must smoke, take a personal ashtray. Do not discard cigarette ends or any litter.
  • In the height of summer, hundreds of people gather on the nearby cliffs to watch the sun set in the sea behind Es Vedrà - there is absolutely nothing romantic about it any more. There are traffic jams, the flora and fauna in this protected area is in danger and the people living in the whole area are suffering badly. Please come during the day or watch it from the beach or one of the nearby restaurants.

Es Vedrà is shrouded in many myths and legends, the most popular of which is that it is the third most magnetic spot on earth. Mention this to a local however and you will either be met with a blank stare or laughter - it is indeed just a story.

It seems that Es Vedrà's status as a place of myth-making has been around since ancient times. It was even thought to be home to the Sirens of Greek mythology, who lured sailors to their death with songs causing them to shipwreck.

It has also been suggested that it is the birthplace of the goddess Tanit, a deity introduced by the once occupying Phoenicians, whose statue you will see all across Ibiza. Many more legends exist, none of them have of course been proved.

However you get to see it, one thing is for sure: once you have been close up to Es Vedrà, it will leave a long-lasting impression on your imagination and make you ache to return.
