World Cleanup Day
Don’t miss this year’s World Cleanup Day, which takes place on Saturday 17 September. To mark it, the various local non-profit associations that make up the Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera alliance we helped to found are organising a number of actions around the island to improve our beloved beaches.
Running from 09:30 to 13:00, they will take place on the beaches of Cala Conta (where the activity takes the form of a “hike & clean”), Cala Bassa, Cala Vadella, Talamanca, Figueretas, Playa den Bossa, Es Cavallet, Las Salinas, Portinatx, Santa Eulalia, Cala Llonga and Es Canar, plus Ses Pesqueres Altes (S’Estufador) in Formentera.
Check out @plasticfreeibiza on Instagram for more details and come along to meet other volunteers, have fun and join the movement to preserve the islands’ breath-taking natural beauty!
Ibiza-Preservation fundraiser
We would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who turned out to support the foundation at our August fundraising event. Some 150 attendees - including the ex-Formula 1 racing driver Nico Rosberg, and the fashion designers Ozwald Boateng and Charo Ruiz - joined us for a very special evening dining under the sabina trees at the exclusive Jondal restaurant, followed by an after-party at the island’s newest hotspot, Club Chinois.
Gifts for the guests were kindly provided by Sal de Ibiza and Beauty Disrupted, with drinks courtesy of Marqués de Riscal, Ibizkus, Bodegas Can Rich, Ibosim, Soul Water and Familia Marí Mayans. A raffle with some fantastic prizes helped to raise some €50,000 overall, to help support our environmental projects on the island: Ibiza Produce, Plastic Free Ibiza & Formentera, Posidonia seagrass protection, and the Sustainability Observatory.
Keep an eye out next year when we will have an extra-special fundraiser to celebrate our 15th birthday. There is no better chance to do your bit for the Ibiza you know and love!
Organic farmland on Ibiza expands
Meanwhile, our Sustainability Observatory has just published some very encouraging news about organic farming on Ibiza. In the past decade, the extent of organic farmland has tripled to reach over 1,000 hectares (almost 2,500 acres). The number of organic farmers and producers also continues to increase.
One key factor in this expansion is the growing demand among the island’s restaurants and consumers for locally sourced organic produce, something our Ibiza Produce project has been working hard on. Check out the handy map we’ve produced showing where all the organic farm shops are and how to contact them, as well as which fruit and vegetables are in season when!
